WOW. My 2nd DD! Thank you, that's awesome!
The creation of this photo was fairly simple in terms of post-processing. As the photo is originally RAW-format, I increased saturation, contrast and sharpness. I added brightness adjustments locally on the chickens, and darkened as well as blurred the background. This separated them from the wooden wall and brings a lot more "mood" to the photo. The painterly look probably originates from the soft and limited light, some slight blur due to a slow shutter speed, as well as the texture on the feathers.
Their heads all pointing in the same direction was pure luck.

Wow! It is really hard to get a good clear photo of chickens in lower light! I always seem to end up with one moving, or they have their inner eyelid closed and look like a chicken zombie. Of course, I only carry around a little camera, so it can fit in my pocket while I am hanging with my peeps. 
I, too thought it was a painting at first.
